Compare not only the buy and sell commission, but also the minimum opening amount, monthly account fee, minimum commission per trade and foreign-currency conversion costs.
Not necessarily. A low percentage rate may matter less when there is a high minimum commission, especially for smaller trades.
Even when the trading commission is a percentage of the transaction amount, a minimum charge usually applies to each trade. That minimum can be especially significant for smaller trades.
It can be a significant cost when buying securities abroad. Check not only whether a conversion commission is charged, but also the exchange-rate spread used for the conversion.
Some benefits are offered for a limited period. Before joining, check the account fees and commissions that will apply after the promotion ends.
In many cases, securities can be transferred to the new account without selling them. Before transferring, check whether all holdings can be moved and what costs the existing provider charges.
